Moving Home

Moving home with pets can be a stressful experience for both you and your furry companions. To ensure a smooth transition and minimise their anxiety, consider the following advice:

Prepare your pets in advance: Animals are sensitive to changes in their environment. Gradually introduce moving boxes and packing materials so they can become accustomed to the new sights and smells. Keep their favorite toys and bedding with them throughout the process.

Update identification and microchips: Just before the move, make sure your pets are wearing collars with updated ID tags and that their microchips have the new address. In the event they get lost during the move, this will increase the chances of a safe return.

Secure a pet-friendly home: Ensure your new home is suitable for your pets. Check for any potential hazards or escape routes and fix these before bringing your pets into the new space. Be careful to keep hazardous materials out of reach and tuck away loose wires, etc.

Keep them away from the action: On moving day, consider leaving your pets with a trusted friend or boarding them. This will protect them from the chaos and stress of the moving process.

Use familiar items: In your new home, set up a designated area with familiar items like their bed, toys, and food bowls. This will help create a sense of comfort and security for them.

Stick to routines: As much as possible, maintain their regular feeding, walking, and playtime schedules. Familiar routines will help them feel more at ease during the transition.

Be patient and observant: Moving can be overwhelming for pets, and they may exhibit unusual behavior or anxiety. Be patient, give them time to adjust, and watch for any signs of distress. If you notice prolonged behavioral changes, consult a vet. You can also use a plug-in pheromone spray, which may help some pets during temporary changes.

Reintroduce outdoor time slowly: If your pets have always had outdoor access, reintroduce it slowly. Do not let dogs out into the garden until you’ve thoroughly checked the boundaries for hazards or potential escape routes, such as damaged fences or holes dug by wildlife. Keep cats indoors for at least 4-6 weeks to help them adjust to their new home. Initially, let them out only during the daytime, under supervision, and on an empty stomach—hungry cats are more likely to return!

Show love and attention: During this transition, your pets will need extra love and attention. Spend quality time with them to reassure them that everything will be okay.
